Management/Give Back Fridays
Let employees spend their Fridays working on anything that “gives back.” This could be open source, writing docs for e.g. MDN, Wikipedia. The idea: pay back for all the value extracted from the open (source) world. At least 20% of our time. Having companies donate money to OSS projects seems tricky, perhaps allowing employees to donate time is more palatable and for sure will impact:
- Employee motivation and engagement
- Employee personal development
What this requires:
- Some level of accountability: could be as simple as people posting a “daily” style update on a slack channel. “I’m spending my Friday on X, last Friday I achieved Y”
- An opportunity to “demo” the work done. Again, can be a sync in video form from time to time.
If every Friday is too expensive, perhaps every 2 weeks or even every month.
